SATELLITE IMAGERY

In 2018 and 2019, researcher Shawn Zhang at the University of British Columbia shocked the world with his reporting on satellite imagery that showed in pictures the quick transformation of open spaces to constructed facilities, over short periods of time. It is upon his research that we assembled the satellite imagery that appears in All Static & Noise. His list of Re-education Camps in Xinjiang was published in Medium here. The Australian Strategic Policy Institute went further in their analysis with the Xinjiang Data Project. Megha Rajagopalan, Alison Killing, and Christo Buschek’s Pulitzer Prize winning reporting for BuzzFeed brought us China Secretly Built a Vast New Infrasturcture to Imprison Muslims that used thousands of satellite images to show the growing infrastructure for long-term detention and incarceration.
